William Austin Shonerd

William Austin Shonerd, 94, Lt. Cdr., USN (Ret.), of Sedona, Arizona, died on May 3, 2015. He is survived by his three children: Jackie Shonerd of Oakland, Ca.; Laura Shonerd Genuario (Louis) of Alexandria,Va.; and Robert Shonerd (Zhanna)of Marietta, Ga. He is also survived by his six grandchildren Ariel, Henry, Rosemary, Vincent, Arthur, and Emily; and one great-grandchild, Tyson. Lt.Cdr. Shonerd graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1942 and served aboard submarines in the Pacific theater during WWII. Settling in Vienna, Va., following his retirement, he shared his love of mathematics and intellectual inquiry through a second career teaching that subject at the high school level. Shonerd urged his students to think independently and to form their own opinions based on their individual experiences, in academics as well as in life. Intellectually curious and a spiritual seeker, he was a longtime member of the OSHO community in Sedona.
