Mary Vernon Alford

Beloved wife, mother and aunt, Mary Vernon Alford died on August 26, 2022 in Sedona, AZ. She was born on January 29, 1933, in Santa Ana, CA, to John Johnson Vernon and Mildred Naomi Austin Vernon. She grew up in Santa Ana and graduated from Santa Ana High School and Santa Ana College. Santa Ana was also where she met and married her husband, Don. They were together for almost 44 years. Mary was known for her devotion to her family and friends, her strong Christian faith, her patriotism, as well as her love of gardening, cats, and baseball. Mary was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Santa Ana, and then of Crestview Community Church in Sedona. Following in the footsteps of her mother, Mildred Vernon, Mary was very active in DAR.  She was predeceased by her husband, Donald W. Alford, her mother and father, her sisters, Betty Louise Vernon Whitfield and Peggy Vernon Hoyt. Mary is survived by her daughter Peggy Alford-Huxford (Kevin), nephew John Vernon Whitfield (Sheryl), and niece Maura Ann Whitfield, and as well as other family members. Services will be held at Greers Mortuary, Sedona, AZ at 10 am on Friday September 9, 2022. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Humane Society of Sedona or the American Cancer Society.
