Janell Lynne Robb-Mahaffey Surber was born in Albion, Nebraska on September 10, 1947, to parents Shirley Wallick and Forest Robb. She grew up in Augusta, Kansas and graduated from Augusta High School in 1965. She completed cosmetology school and met future husband, Vernie Surber, while he competed in various skeet shooting competitions at the gun club managed by her stepfather, Ronald H. Mahaffey. Janell and Vernie were married in Augusta on August 12, 1967. Janell and Vernie were blessed with two children, Shelley and Mike. She and her family moved to Camp Verde, Arizona in June of 1986.
Janell was exceptionally brilliant, succeeding in every task she set herself to. Among her favorite pastimes were various crafts such as making artistic candles, barrel racing on her favorite horse, Syl, and cooking. She even tried her hand at writing children’s stories. Janell taught a Bible class. She was a collector of antiques and a recent participant in Facebook. Traveling took her to London, Scotland, Germany, Austria and all over the U.S. Besides her Christian faith, her most avid interests were her children, grandchildren, and anything Victorian and Antebellum.
Janell is preceded by her parents and son, Michael. She is survived by her husband, Vernie; daughter, Shelley; granddaughter, Peach (Greg); grandson, Sam (Emily) and their families; brothers, Mike, Ronnie and Patrick; sister, Linda and cousin Dennis Wallick of Augusta.
Services will be held at Camp Verde Christian Church, 621 E. Howards Rd, Camp Verde, AZ on Saturday, April 9 at 11:00am. All who loved Janell are invited to follow us for a brief graveside service at Clear Creek Cemetery. There will be no refreshments following the services. In lieu of flowers, we are setting up donations for a book fund for the Christian school here in Camp Verde. More info on that to follow.
