Hoyt Charles Johnson

Hoyt Charles Johnson passed away peacefully at his home in Sedona, AZ at age 88 from complications of Parkinsonism.

Hoyt was born in Elmwood, WI on February 17, 1930, and raised in Cumberland, WI. He attended Cumberland High School, Rice Lake High School, and graduated from Richland Center High School. After serving in the US Air Force, he received a degree in Pharmacy from The University of Wisconsin Madison. Hoyt owned and operated drug stores in Elm Grove, Spring Green and Cumberland, WI. After a career change to publishing (prescriptions to subscriptions!) he owned and published The Cumberland Advocate newspaper in Cumberland, WI; Scottsdale Scene Magazine in Scottsdale, AZ; and Sedona Magazine and Sedona Visitors Guide in Sedona, AZ. Hoyt also published Sedona, The Most Uniquely Beautiful Place on Earth, a pictorial hard cover book, and The Sedona Story, a popular book recounting Sedonas first 100 years.

Hoyt was married to the love of his life, Marcia, for 60 years, and was very proud of his family and their accomplishments. He enjoyed writing, golf and his family businesses. Hoyt was honored to be a member of The Scottsdale Charros, The Fiesta Bowl Committee, and The Sedona 30.

Hoyt is survived by his wife, Marcia; sons Tom (Noreen) their children Zac and Jule; John (Michelle) their children Jack, Hannah and Joey; Hoyt III and his children Justin, Joshua (Bree) and Jacob; and daughter Julie and her children Erin (Robb), Taylor and Kellie; and four great-grandchildren, Remi, Coral, Kedzie and Jacob. Hoyt is also survived by his brothers Jack (Margaret) and Paul (Carol). He was preceded in death by his parents, Hoyt and Thelma Johnson, and his brother Tommy.

A private family service is being planned with burial at Lakeside Cemetery in Cumberland, WI. At Hoyts request, memorial contributions can be made to Sedona Historical Society, 735 Jordan Road, Sedona, AZ 86336. Final arrangements are being handled by Greers Mortuary in Sedona, AZ and Skinner Funeral Home in Cumberland, WI.
