Our beloved sister and stepmom is now at peace.
Carole Evelyn Steed passed away peacefully at home on August 18, 2026, closing a long and meaningful life marked by devotion to family, quiet strength, and a gentle spirit. Born in Houston, Texas, on September 12, 1939, Carole was the daughter of Evelyn Olivia Barker and Thurburn Howard Barker. She was baptized at the Church of the Redeemer in March 1940 and remained a faithful Episcopalian throughout her life.
Carole is survived by her brother, Thurburn Howard Barker, Jr., her half‑sister, Cecilia Ruth Anne Barker, and her three stepsons, Allan Michael Steed, Zachary Steed and Clayton Steed, who cherished her deeply.
Early Life and Family Moves
Carole’s childhood unfolded during the World War II era. In 1943, her father entered the military’s “Engineering, Science and Management” training program through Texas A&M, preparing civilians to support the wartime workforce. In May 1944, he accepted an accounting position in Asheville, North Carolina, and the family traveled there by train.
Carole began first grade in Asheville, NC in 1945, where her teachers praised her exceptional reading skills, neat handwriting, attentiveness, musical rhythm, and artistic creativity. In 1946, the family moved to Brevard, North Carolina, where her father became City Clerk and Treasurer. Their home at 450 East Main Street remained one of Carole’s most treasured memories.
In 1952, the family returned to Houston, settling on Shady Creek Drive. Carole graduated from Milby High School with a full secretarial curriculum. She remained at home until 1963, supporting her family through the loss of her mother, Evelyn, who passed away in 1961.
Early Adulthood and Career
Carole began her professional life at the Credit Bureau of Houston (1958–1962), followed by work in Export Drilling for the National Supply Division of Armco Steel (1963–1968). She married Gary Burnett Murphy in 1963; though the marriage ended in 1981.
In 1984, she moved to Ventura County in California and lived with her brother, Thurburn, and his family. While there, she met and married Robert Daniel Gray in 1985, and they made their home in Ventura County. By 2000, Robert’s severe health problems required his admittance to a nursing home in California until his death.
In 1984, Carole joined the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Port Hueneme, California to become the secretary for the JHU/APL field office in support of the U. S. Navy’s NAVSEA, Port Hueneme Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center. She gained a reputation for her excellent and effective working relationships in support of the goals of JHU/APL and the U. S. Navy’s NSWC. Carole retired in March 2002 and was recognized for her years of service there at her retirement party.
Sedona Years and Marriage to Allan T. Steed
In 2002, Carole moved to Sedona, Arizona, purchasing her home in Sunset Village. She joined the office staff and worked there for several years. During this time, she met Allan T. Steed, who also lived in Sunset Village. Their friendship grew into companionship, and eventually into love.
Carole met Allan’s three sons, Zachary, Clayton, and Allan M. Steed, on various visits. Before proposing, Allan asked all three sons if they supported his desire to marry Carole. Each of them gave their blessing. Carole accepted his proposal, and they were married on October 21, 2006. Both were entering their third marriage, and for them, the third time truly was the charm. Allan’s eldest son, Allan M. Steed, served as his Best Man and photographed Carole in her wedding dress before the ceremony.
Carole and Allan enjoyed the remainder of their lives together until his passing on December 4, 2022. They loved dancing, traveling in the Red Pickup Truck and RV camper, and taking trips with friends from Sunset Village. Their adventures carried them through Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, Wyoming, and beyond, sometimes short trips up the canyon toward Flagstaff, other times long journeys across the Western states. They also traveled to Florida to visit family and to Virginia, where they enjoyed sightseeing in Washington, D.C.
In 2009, Allan became a grandfather to Clayton’s son, Sawyer. Carole embraced her role as “Grandma Carole,” and Sawyer grew up knowing her love and warmth.
Interests and Personality
Carole adored her two cats and had a deep appreciation for American Indian art, traditions, and dream catchers. She loved reading, watching her favorite television shows, and doing crossword puzzles. Her gentle nature, thoughtful presence, and quiet joy made her a beloved part of every community she joined.
A Life Well Remembered
Carole’s life was shaped by faith, family, and perseverance. She carried her childhood memories with affection, honored her commitments, and approached each chapter with grace. Those who knew her will remember her kindness, her loyalty, and the love she shared freely with those around her.
She is now at peace, reunited with loved ones who went before her, and held in God’s eternal care.
